With the Raptors at 10 games under .500 at the halfway mark, this season is pretty much in the tank. This leads me to flights of fancy such as this post where I ponder Chris Bosh's current trade value.
Note that I am in no way advocating that the Raptors should trade Chris Bosh — but I should also note that I'm not entirely opposed to the prospect, either. This is simply an exercise to measure everyone's perception of CB4's relative worth in the NBA.
What follows will be three lists of players. The first list is for players whose GMs would hang up the phone if you tried to suggest a straight-up trade. The second list is for players whose GMs would consider the offer and then probably decline. The third list features players whose GMs would consider the offer and then probably accept.
For this exercise, we're pretending that Bosh could be traded straight-up for any of these players regardless of their relative salaries. I'm also choosing to ignore how Bosh would fit on his destination team (Is there already a better player on that team playing his position?) because that could lead to an argument about whether or not the Celtics would trade Kendrick Perkins for Bosh and I really don't want to go down that road.
With that out of the way, here is what I will call the "No Effing Way List".
LeBron James
Dwyane Wade
Dwight Howard
Kevin Garnett
Tim Duncan
Kobe Bryant
Chris Paul
Yao Ming
I'm pretty comfortable with stating that we couldn't get any of the guys on that list straight-up for Chris Bosh. I pondered the Yao Ming inclusion for a moment, but he's only missed one game so far this season and he's a merchandising cash cow for Houston so he makes the list.
Let's call this next list the "Thanks But No Thanks List".
Deron Williams
Brandon Roy
Kevin Durant
Derrick Rose
Andrew Bynum
Greg Oden
O.J. Mayo
I expect to receive quite a few complaints about this list in the comments. As you've doubtlessly noticed, these are young prospects who have not reached their full potential yet. While you could certainly make the case that their respective teams would be thrilled to have them become as good as Chris Bosh, I think their youth and upside make each of them too difficult to give up for a player who appears to have maxed out his ability at this point.
The final list is the "You Twisted My Arm List" of players that Bosh could probably fetch in a straight-up trade — salaries and team composition notwithstanding. Needless to say, any player that isn't mentioned on any of these lists goes on the "You Had Me At Hello List".
Andris Biedrins
Amare Stoudemire
Paul Pierce
Carmelo Anthony
Al Jefferson
Chauncey Billups
Devin Harris
Danny Granger
Pau Gasol
Tony Parker
Manu Ginobili
Dirk Nowitzki
Michael Beasley
I feel like the two most debatable names on this list are Andris Biedrins and Devin Harris. Biedrins is younger and is a tremendous rebounder and defender, but Bosh is such an impact player offensively that it would be very difficult to turn down this offer. As for Harris, his breakout season is certainly a great story, but I'm not convinced he would put up those kinds of numbers on a team with more than one other legitimate scoring option. The rest of the players are on the list due to their age or because Bosh is just slightly better overall.
As you might have figured, my main purpose for this post is to generate discussion about which players are on the wrong list. The second list is probably the most contentious. Am I over-valuing potential over present-day performance? Do some of the guys on the third list belong on second list? And which players did I miss altogether? Give me your worst...
