With the Jarrett Jack signing finally made official, Raptors fans' thoughts naturally turn to the rest of the team's 2009-10 bench. But before we get to that, it's worth a mention that Jack and Chris Bosh are long-time friends and I would be remiss to ignore the fact that this further increases the likelihood that Bosh will re-sign with the Raptors in 2010.
Honestly, I think it would take a Titanic-level disaster next season for Bosh to sour on this franchise sufficiently that he floats away on his free agency lifeboat. His comfort level with the team and the city have to play a significant role in the decision, and Bryan Colangelo is doing all the right things to make Bosh feel comfortable. This is not to say that Jack's friendship with Bosh was the primary reason for the signing — but whether Colangelo will admit it or not, it certainly didn't hurt his value to the team.
Now, on to the bench. This would appear to be the Raptors' depth chart at the moment:
PG - Calderon, Jack, Ukic
SG - DeRozan, Wright
SF - Turkoglu, George
PF - Bosh, Evans
C - Bargnani, O'Bryant
Two of those backups (George and O'Bryant) arguably don't belong on a competitive NBA roster unless their primary role is "towel-waver", so it's safe to say that Colangelo's work is not quite done this off-season. In order of priority, Colangelo's next targets should be...
1a. Carlos Delfino (SG/SF) — Delfino is mostly a guard and I would prefer him to start at SG on opening day while DeMar DeRozan gets his feet wet. He would also be a preferable backup solution to Devean George at SF because George has been increasingly terrible over the past three seasons. However, if Delfino gets signed, Antoine Wright would probably move to backup SF.
1b. Rasho Nesterovic (C) — Solid post defender who the Raptors should be able to sign for their bi-annual exception of $1.99 million. O'Bryant as your backup may not seem so horrible if he's only playing 10 minutes per night, but what about if Bargnani gets hurt for an extended period?
2. Joey Graham (SF) — Remember this guy? If the Delfino signing doesn't happen, Joey probably becomes the next-best option at backup SF while Wright fills the role of backup two-guard. I rag on Joey a lot but I think I can keep most of my hair for the near future if everyone (you know who you are, Joey fans) accepts that he's destined to be a career backup in the league — not because "nobody gave him a chance", but because that's his actual value.
3. Pops Mensah-Bonsu (SF/PF/♥) — He can almost certainly be had for the NBA minimum, he's a fan favourite, he claims to be working on his SF game, and his Twitter feed's entertainment value is highly underrated. (Sample Tweet: "Just saw a lil kid with skinny jeans. This is going too far.") If you need more than that, the Raptors look like they could be anemic on the boards once again next season, and Pops averages 13.6 rebounds (6.5 offensive) per 36 minutes for his career. Yeah, it's only for 354 career minutes, but the guy is a flat-out hustin', glass-cleanin' fool and could set a good example for certain team-mates who are notoriously less enthusiastic about their rebounding responsibilities.
My personal preference would be for Colangelo to choose options 1a, 1b, and 3 from the free agent buffet. That would change the depth chart to something like this:
PG - Calderon, Jack, Ukic
SG - Delfino, DeRozan, Wright
SF - Turkoglu, Wright, Pops
PF - Bosh, Evans, Pops
C - Bargnani, Rasho, O'Bryant
That looks like a fairly solid, diverse bench crew for the Raptors to enter into battle with for the 2009-10 season. It's almost certainly an improvement over last season's bench squad — which was fourth-worst in the NBA in point differential, as Supersub reported in May. If Colangelo can conjure up that depth chart and if the starters remain mostly healthy, even a notorious parade-pisser like me can visualize a 2010 post-season appearance for the Raptors.
Edited to add: Several people have pointed out in the comments that the Raptors would have to cut somebody in order to sign three people. I realized this but failed to mention it because I'm not overly concerned which 15th man they cut. But if you're putting me on the spot, I would cut Devean George and keep Qunicy Douby.
