QUOTE Report: Williams considering CFL After playing last season in balmy Miami, Ricky Williams' next employer could hail from a considerably colder climate. According to a report in the Miami Herald, Williams' agent said the suspended running back would consider playing for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League next season. Leigh Steinberg also said he would begin negotiations with the team shortly. ''Ricky is open to it, so we'll see what's there,'' Steinberg said. "We haven't gotten into specifics of a deal yet. On the plus side, this is an opportunity to have him compete and stay in football shape while having some economic benefit. "Toronto is one of the nicest Canadian cities, the organization is one of the best in the CFL, and they have a good coach who is open to players like Ricky. The minus is, obviously, the prospect of him getting hurt.'' While Williams appeared open to the move, it was not immediately clear whether the Dolphins were OK with it. Williams, who is under contract with the Dolphins through the 2008 season, must receive permission from the team to play in the CFL. The Dolphins have the right to prevent Williams from playing elsewhere because of a standard clause in NFL contracts. Last week, Williams lost his appeal of a fourth failed drug test and was suspended for the entire 2006 NFL season. It looks like I might go to my first ever CFL game this year! |

Can they have Rasta Nights if he plays for Toronto? First 500 people get a blunt? Would anyone be against this?

I'm a Bombers fan but I hope this happens, the Argos are playing in Winnipeg on my birthday as well. Doug Brown who plays for the Bombers wrote an article in the Winnipeg Free Press about how he thinks if Ricky Williams came to Toronto, he'd never leave (no drug testing in CFL, less pressure, doesn't care about make a ton of money, etc.).

QUOTE Dolphins likely to OK Ricky playing in Canada BY JASON COLE The Dolphins appear close to permitting Ricky Williams to play in the Canadian Football League. Suspended Dolphins running back Ricky Williams may be getting some northern exposure this season. The Dolphins appeared close to giving Williams permission to speak with the Toronto Argonauts about playing this season in the Canadian Football League on Thursday. The Dolphins initially didn't want to let Williams play there, but have backed off after agent Leigh Steinberg pointed out the financial burden facing Williams. Argonauts assistant general manager Greg Mohns has been discussing the situation with Steinberg since Williams was suspended by the NFL for a minimum of one season last month. ''The situation is progressing along and something may get done here pretty soon,'' Mohns said Thursday. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said the team declined to comment. Beyond that, a source was even stronger about the point: 'Unless it blows up, the Dolphins are not going to stand in [Williams'] way of playing.'' Last Friday, coach Nick Saban indicated he wasn't particularly enamored of the idea of Williams' risking injury in Canada. However, Saban never completely shut the door on the idea. Once Toronto has gained formal permission, Williams and Steinberg are expected to fly there to discuss a contract. Argonauts general manager Adam Rita indicated earlier this week that Williams could earn approximately $300,000 Canadian in base pay and incentives. A deal could be done fairly quickly. The Argonauts open training camp May 21 and open the regular season June 16. |

QUOTE Williams agrees to deal to play for CFL's Argonauts Ricky Williams has agreed to a one-year contract for $240,000 to play for the CFL's Toronto Argonauts this season, ESPN.com's John Clayton has learned. Williams will not have an option with the team and will be able to return to the Dolphins next season. The Argonauts have called a 4:30 p.m. ET news conference to announce a "major signing." The Miami Herald, citing a source close to the Argos, had earlier reported that the Dolphins would allow Williams to play for Toronto s long as they have it in writing that he will be released at the end of the CFL season. The Argonauts secured Williams' CFL rights when the running back was suspended for a year by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. The team's training camp starts Sunday, and the team opens its regular season June 16. The Dolphins had been reluctant to let Williams play in Canada due to the risk of injury, but apparently relented. Williams has three children and a fourth on the way and has reportedly earned $270,000 since December 2003, the Herald reported. He owes the Dolphins $8.6 million for breaching his contract when he retired in 2004. "We expressed to Ricky our concerns about playing in Toronto in 2006. We are relying on assurances made by Ricky, his agent, the Toronto Argonauts, and the commissioner of the Canadian Football League that Ricky will return to the Dolphins in 2007," Dolphins coach Nick Saban said in a statement. "Based on these assurances and despite our concerns for Ricky playing in the CFL in 2006, we will leave it up to him to decide whether or not he will negotiate a contract to play for the Argonauts this year." Williams rushed for 743 yards and six touchdowns last season. This post has been edited by PickedBeforeIggy: May 28 2006, 01:35 PM |

I don't get this.
I truly would love for the Argos to grab the best players and bring back the Grey Cup to T-Dot, but can someone give me a hand figuring this out here. Aren't the Argos (Led by Clemens) are the ones who go from school to school stressing the importance of the right values and the correct principles we should live up and that Character is the key to anything else? And now they go and visibly throw all they got at a proven crackhead?! Am I missing something? |

He's a coach that can relate to the players and I think that's a big part of his success. |

I think I may be the only one still paying attention but, to use the cliche, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are Ricky Williams' daddy.
