I just realized I haven't watched a movie in a long time. My all time favorites are Memento, Boondock Saints, High Fidelity and Unforgiven. Favorite music related films are Westway To The World (Clash Documentary), Under Blackpool Lights (White Stripes), Live In New York City (Springsteen), the 5 song DVD that came with the Band Boxset, and the Last Waltz.

He called me up, and I said, "Sure I'd like a job. What does it mean? What do I do?" And he said, "Well, son, you won't make much money, but you'll get more pussy than Frank Sinatra."

I've seen Sunset Park. Its basically your stereotypical sports movie.

Bunch of scrubs on a team, new coach, problems between coach and scrubs, coach wins over scrubs, scrubs go on to beat every team they face to win the championship.

**I'm not even sure thats what happens in the movie, since i haven't seen it in like 4 or 5 years, but i am pretty sure thats the plot.

Yes, it's incredibly average and predictable plotline, but the pre-fame Terrence Howard as the chronic on the team is incredible. Best part of the movie is when he gets in the game and lays out the other teams player.

Just saw this thread.

All I want to add is that I refuse to believe anyone, anywhere actually enjoyed the Thin Red Line, despite the fact it was up for a Best Picture Oscar. What a joke that was. I have set aside a special place in my heart just to hate that movie.

THANK YOU!

What a total, unadelterated piece of crap that movie was. I was completely dumbfounded whenever I heard or read someone say they thought it was a great film.

Amen picnic.

Watching the Thin Red Line, with its endless shots of flora and fauna and its incorporation of meandering voiceovers of soldiers that all seem to be failed poets or first year philosophy majors is an arduous, Sisyphean task. The Thin Red Line is an incoherent mess devoid of charcter development, a linear narrative, a thematic pulse or engaging drama - it is no more than a random selection of scenes from Mutiny on the Bounty, Apocalypse Now and the Discovery Channel.

This is the type of "movie" (it pains me to call this vile monstrosity a movie) that people purport to enjoy only because they think they are supposed to have enjoyed it. It is inconceivable that such an assertion could actually be reflective of any form of genuine appreciation for the work.

In that regard, the Thin Red Line is the cinematic equivalent of an indecipherable, abstract painting hanging in a prestigious art gallery. Learned observers stand around exchanging their views on how the artwork is an internalized portrait of external pandemonium and a slippery, insidiously, haunting work of poetry; when in reality it is just dog poop smeared on canvass with a tic-tac in the middle that an arthritic, one armed monkey with only one good eye could have crafted.

I watched M:I:III the other day. Maybe if Tom Cruise wasn't so crazy outside the movie, it would've been not 3/4 bad. Unfortunately, I couldn't differentiate the intense Ethan Hawk from the intense Tom Cruise, so the movie was okay on some action fronts but was a bit distracting. Oh yeah, and it was crazy corny at the end.

The only good thing that prolly came out of the movie for me was the rolling credits, where Kayne West ft./Twista and Keisha Cole's version of "Impossible" song played. Very catchy tune so I had to download it

I saw MI:III the other day as well. I found it to be less exciting than an episode of 24.

Indeed. It was unwatchable.

Another unwatchable movie that was critically acclaimed was Napoleon Dynamite.

Hipster college kids --the type who write letters to NOW magazine-- liked it because it was perceived to be different from the mainstream and high school kids liked it because they got to share in the mocking of a high school loser and his Mexican friend for 2 hours. Hopefully the "actor" who played Napoleon will disapear now that he's made another piece of crap with the Adam Sandler and David Spade.

Handsome_Boy
^ lets not go too far there homey. the weirdness and character acting of napoleon and his brother kip make it a good movie. some of the lines are just classic, actually pretty much everything kip says is classic

I'm glad someone else shared my dislike of Napolean Dynamite. I don't think I laughed once during the whole movie.

Kip was indeed mildly amusing.

However, in my humble opinion most people (not you) enjoyed it more because they got a chance to feel superior to a buffoon for 2 hours, rather than for the appreciation of any character acting.

Handsome_Boy
that is probably true, most people are incapable of understanding what comedy actually is

My cousin forced me to watch it a year ago on DVD and it was probably the most pointless move I've seen since "Dazed and Confused". I mean, what's the funny part? Is it funny because they live in Iowa? Is it funny that Pedro is a Mexican? Is it funny because Pedro runs for school president? I don't get it.

La Battaglia di Algeri by Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966 original in Italian but has been dubbed to english as "The Battle of Algiers". One of the greatest movies I have ever seen. I think it was re-released recently for a special edition DVD.

I have to agree with davenags - I heard all these great things about Napoleon Dynamite and when I saw it I didn't laugh once. I thought it was terrible. I like quirky, off-beat comedies; but, this did nothing for me. I have to disagree with PBI though, Dazed and Confused was kind of brilliant.

Since we are on this theme, I think one of the most overrated movies of all time is 2001: A Space Odyssey. I know Kubric's a genius and 2001 is regarded as a monumental achievement in film making but all it did was bore my ass off.

It was banned by the man because it's basically a 'how-to' guide for urban guerrilla warfare. It's so authentic it feels like a documentary.

Not surprising. It's just a ridiculously brilliant and moving piece of cinema. Easily the most stirring film I've ever seen. Very timely now too given the similarities with the contemporary imperialist occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Anyone hear the news bout The Da Vinci Code

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4985370.stm

"A Roman Catholic activist, Joseph Dias, began a hunger strike on Tuesday which he said would be continued until the film is banned."

From what I read, the movie is a bunch of talking.... any1 seen if or planning 2?

Uncle Ted
^ I'm a little bummed that its supposed to be a bomb, because the book was essentially a screenplay masquerading as a novel. How could someone screw that up?? Oh wait Ron Howard directing? Four words: Gimmie... Back... My... SON!!!!!!!!!!!!

How Opie landed that plumb gig I'll never know. It should have gone to someone who knows how to make an over-the-top thriller, like Brian De Palma.
sim_city87
I watched the Da Vinci Code w/o reading the book, and I thought it was pretty good.

Uncle Ted, you mind explaining to me why people are getting worked up over a fictional novel that never happened? Last time I checked, the Da Vinci Code was a book, not a manifesto.

The first page of the book mentions that while the characters and the events aren't real the facts are, or something of the like. There's a lot different information thrown into the book, some with factual basis, others with little evidence (historical theories, conspiracies, etc). After reading the book, I can see where some of the outrage stems from because I could see people reading the book and taking a lot of the religious stuff as fact. Still, it's definitely a mountain out of a mole hill situation.

As far as the movie being subpar (I haven't seen the movie yet), I'm not totally surprised. While the plot of the book has summer blockbuster written all over it, there's a ton of information that brings the story all together. There's also a lot of flashbacks and inner dialogue. I think the task of writing the screenplay was probably easier said than done. (I think it would've been cool to make it kind of cheesy with Star Wars-style cuts back and forth between the different situations)

Do you mean the religious morons protesting the film or the fanatical fans of the cheesy page-turner?

Why are the Catholics up in arms about it? The same reason Muslims freaked over the silly cartoons-- every group's particular delusions are simply beyond criticism and re-interpretation. These people like to boast about how strong their convictions are, and how beautiful their ideas are, but time and time again we see that the slightest perceived affront to their theology always sparks a violent defence mechanism. This is because, in my opinion, when it comes to religion most people talk the talk-- but seldom walk the walk. All semi-educated people living in the modern world know things like: virgin births, talking bushes, boats with two of every living creature, water into wine, and returning from the dead don't happen now, and have never, in fact, happened. People like to feel as though they are a part of something bigger than themselves and bigger than their own brief existence... uh where am I going here?

In conclusion, people are dumb. Anyone who's world view is threatened by a Ron Howard (Ransom, Splash, Cocoon, The Grinch etc. etc.) movie starring Tom Hanks (Turner & Hooch, The 'Burbs, Joe Versus the Volcano ) has very little faith.
Handsome_Boy
